The Rose Myrtle tree thrives in moist forests at altitudes up to 2400 meters, even on nutrient-poor sandy soil. It is tolerant of both sunlight and flooding, preferring moist, slightly acidic soil but not thriving well in limestone-rich soil. It can invade various habitats, from pine forests to saline marshes. It grows in diverse soil types, including coastal saline soil, but is sensitive to heavy salt spray. The Rose Myrtle tree is widely distributed in the mountainous regions of Central Vietnam from Nghe An to Hue. Rose Myrtle blossoms in April-May and ripens around July, with the harvesting period lasting for three months.
Cây sim (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa Wight) thuộc họ Sim. Hạt giống được phân tán bởi các loài chim ăn quả. Chim phân tán bằng cách thả hạt. Cây sim có thể mọc trong rừng ẩm ướt ở độ cao tới 2400 m, trên đất cát nghèo dinh dưỡng. Nó chịu được cả nắng và ngập lụt. Nó ưa thích đất ẩm, hơi chua; không thích nghi tốt với đất đá vôi. Nó có thể xâm nhập nhiều loại môi trường sống, từ rừng thông đến đầm lầy ngập mặn. Nó phát triển ở nhiều loại đất, kể cả đất mặn ven biển, nhưng nhạy cảm với phun muối nặng. Cây Sim phân bổ nhiều ở khu vục đồi núi miền Trung Việt Nam từ Nghệ An tới Huế. Sim ra hoa vào khoảng tháng 4 – 5 và chín vào khoảng tháng 7, thời gian thu hoạch kéo dài trong 3 tháng.
The Rose Myrtle tree is a shrub with multiple branches. Its leaves are opposite, oval-shaped, thick, with three main veins and tomentose undersides. In late spring, the tree starts to bloom, with Rose Myrtle flowers forming in small clusters at the tips of branches. From pale pink buds, the flowers burst into bright red stamens, gradually transitioning to vivid purple petals. During sunny summer days, the hillsides are adorned with the purple hue of Rose Myrtle flowers. As the petals fall, the firm green Rose Myrtle fruits emerge, characterized by their bitter taste while still green. In the scorching summer days, Rose Myrtle fruits begin to ripen in abundance.
Cây Sim là cây dạng bụi phân thành nhiều cành. Lá của cây sim mọc đối nhau, hình trứng, phiến dày, gồm 3 gân chính, có lông tơ ở mặt dưới. Cuối mùa xuân cây bắt đầu nở hoa, hoa sim mọc thành từng búp nhỏ đầu ngọn cây, từ màu hồng nhạt hoa nở bung to lộ phần nhuỵ hoa màu đỏ rồi cánh hoa chuyển dần thành màu tím đậm rực rỡ, từ một vài bụi hoa, sắc tím của hoa sim bao phủ lấy cả khoảng đồi núi ngày hè. Khi những cánh hoa rụng xuống, đó cũng là lúc những quả sim xanh tròn cứng cáp được ra đời, quả sim lúc còn xanh thì cứng cáp với vị chát đặc trưng.
