Quế hoa (Osmanthus fragans) is a plant species discovered growing wild in Ninh Binh, the Northern Delta of Vietnam. Despite its rugged appearance with visible signs of hardship in the trunk and prominent leaf veins, the Osmanthus tree produces vibrant golden clusters of flowers at its apex.
Quế hoa hay còn được gọi là mộc hoa, một loài cây được phát hiện mọc dại thành bụi tại Ninh Bình (đồng bằng Bắc Bộ, Việt Nam). Quế hoa ta có thân cây nứt nẻ, hiện rõ sự cằn cỗi, gân lá hiện rõ, mộc mạc đến vậy nhưng quế hoa vẫn rực rỡ mọc thành từng chùm vàng ươm ở đầu ngọn cây.
These Osmanthus flowers are most brilliant during the scorching summer sun in Central Vietnam. In folklore, they are often referred to as “sắc trà hương mộc” as they possess the beauty of Camellia and the unique fragrance of Osmanthus flowers.
Quế hoa thường nở rộ nhất dưới cái nắng gắt, gió hanh của mùa hạ miền Trung. Khi nhắc đến quế hoa (hay mộc hoa) trong dân gian thường nói rằng: “sắc trà hương mộc”, ý chỉ sắc đẹp của hoa trà và hương thơm đặc biệt của quế hoa.

Osmanthus flowers have four thick, glossy petals with a mildly spicy, slightly bitter taste followed by a sweet and warm aftertaste. When dried, the flowers have a more resilient texture but still retain their exquisite aroma. At Nén, they are carefully fermented to create a mildly sweet, fragrant cordial used in “Danang Sky Part 1.”

Quế hoa có 4 cánh dày và bóng, có vị cay, chút đắng nhẫn nhẹ với hậu vị ngọt dịu, tính ấm. Khi phơi khô, hoa có kết cấu dẻo dai hơn nhưng vẫn lưu giữ được hương thơm tinh tuý. Quế hoa thường được dùng để ướp trà. Tại Nén, quế hoa được kì công ủ thành rượu thơm dùng trong “Bầu trời Đà Nẵng p.1”
* Osmanthus fragans is not directly related to cinnamon flower despite sharing the same name in Vietnamese. They are two different plant species from separate botanical families.
