The Palmyra fruit or Palm fruit, known locally as “thốt nốt,” is a tropical delicacy found predominantly in Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. In Vietnam, the thốt nốt fruit is a renowned specialty of the An Giang province, a region celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. This fruit, deeply rooted in the lives of the Khmer people, is considered a precious gift from nature to the residents of the Bảy Núi (Seven Mountains) area.
The name “thốt nốt” originates from the Khmer word “th’not”, reflecting the cultural significance of the tree in Khmer traditions. For the Khmer community, the Palmyra tree holds a status similar to that of the coconut tree for the Kinh people in the lowlands, symbolizing a deep connection to their land and way of life.
Trái thốt nốt là một loại quả đặc trưng của vùng nhiệt đới, thường được tìm thấy ở các nước Đông Nam Á như Campuchia, Thái Lan, và Việt Nam. Cây thốt nốt, với khả năng phát triển mạnh mẽ ở các vùng đất có độ ẩm cao, thường mọc nhiều ở gần sông nước và đồng bằng ven biển. Ở Việt Nam, thốt nốt là đặc sản nức tiếng của vùng đất An Giang. Từ bao đời nay, thốt nốt đã được mệnh danh là món quà quý do thiên nhiên ban tặng cho người dân Bảy Núi và gắn liền với đời sống sinh hoạt của đồng bào Khmer.
Cái tên thốt nốt có nguồn gốc xuất xứ từ tiếng Khmer là “th’not”. Với đồng bào Khmer, thốt nốt là một giống cây quý trời ban. Có thể nói rằng, cây thốt nốt gắn bó với cuộc sống người dân Khmer giống như cây dừa của người Kinh ở dưới miền xuôi.

The trees themselves are impressive, often growing up to 20 meters tall. From a distance, they resemble coconut trees, though they are generally taller with broader trunks and fan-like leaves that spread out like palm fronds. Female Palmyra trees produce clusters of 50 to 60 fruits, each smaller than a Siamese coconut, containing a sweet, translucent liquid and soft, white flesh. Male trees, on the other hand, only produce flowers without bearing fruit. At peak ripeness, the thốt nốt fruit exudes a sweet fragrance and distinct flavor, making it an ideal ingredient for refreshing summer treats.
Thông thường, cây thốt nốt có chiều cao khoảng chừng 20 mét. Nhìn từ đằng xa, thốt nốt trông giống hệt cây dừa nhưng thân to và cao hơn, tán lá xòe ra như lá cọ. Cây thốt nốt cái sau khi trổ bông sẽ kết thành từng chùm khoảng 50 đến 60 quả, nhỏ hơn trái dừa Xiêm và ở bên trong có nước cùng với lớp cơm màu trắng đục. Còn cây thốt nốt đực thì chỉ ra hoa chứ không có quả. Khi này, quả thốt nốt đạt độ chín muồi, hương vị ngọt ngào và mùi thơm đặc trưng, khiến nó trở thành một lựa chọn hoàn hảo cho những món ăn giải khát trong ngày hè nóng bức.
The exterior of the thốt nốt fruit is round and about the size of a coconut, encased in a hard, dark brown shell. Inside, the fruit is divided into 2 to 4 segments, each wrapped in a thin, transparent membrane. When peeled away, this membrane reveals a tender, ivory-colored flesh, soft and jelly-like, with a layer of cool, refreshing juice within.
One of the most enchanting qualities of thốt nốt is its delicate aroma, imbued with a light, refreshing scent that pleasantly lingers, reminiscent of young coconut water. The taste is subtly sweet, never overpowering, with a slight creaminess that makes it incredibly easy to enjoy. Nhìn bên ngoài, trái thốt nốt có hình dạng tròn, to cỡ quả dừa, được bao bọc bởi lớp vỏ cứng màu nâu sẫm. Bên trong lớp vỏ này là những múi thịt màu trắng ngà, mềm mịn như thạch. Mỗi quả thường chứa từ 2 đến 4 múi, được bao bọc bởi một lớp màng mỏng trong suốt. Khi bóc lớp màng này, ta sẽ thấy phần thịt trắng mịn, ẩn chứa lớp nước thốt nốt mát lành bên trong.
Một trong những điểm đặc biệt của thốt nốt chính là mùi thơm nhẹ nhàng, thoang thoảng hương vị của nước dừa non. Hương thơm này tạo cảm giác thanh mát và dễ chịu, khiến ai đã từng thử qua một lần đều khó có thể quên.
